Hartlepool Sixth Form has been promoted to the ABL (Academy Basketball League) and has entered into a partnership with Durham University and Junior National League team, Durham Wildcats, to create a complete pathway for local players.
The ABL is an invitation only competition that comprises 30 teams and includes colleges that show a high level of performance.
The promotion for Hartlepool Sixth Form has been long awaited after its unbeaten basketball athletes put in an excellent performance to top the AoC Sport Division 1 North East league for the third year running.
Basketball players in the Tees Valley and County Durham are playing against the best competition in the country outside of the EABL (Elite Academy Basketball League), which is an AASE (Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence) only college league.
Speaking about the partnership with Durham University, Mark Elderkin, Basketball Coach for Hartlepool Sixth Form, who brings BBL (British Basketball League) expertise to the team, said: “I am excited to see where this partnership leads. In its first year it has already provided our 16-19-year olds with an opportunity that isn’t available in the County Durham or Tees Valley area.”
Hartlepool Sixth Form is committed to giving its players the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level available. The partnership with the Durham Wildcats increases this opportunity, as players will be able to compete in the Junior NBL Premier League, which will be a huge challenge but an amazing opportunity for the Academy’s athletes. The Junior NBL team will play out of Durham University’s new £35 million Sports Complex.
Durham University also has plans to create a Senior NBL team which our players will be eligible to play for. Hartlepool Sixth Form also provides opportunities for local children up to the age of 18, through Hartlepool Hurricanes Basketball Club.
Hartlepool Hurricanes currently get together every Monday night (5pm - 6:30pm) for £2 per session.
