Head of Rugby and Forwards Coach
Johan grew up in South Africa and played professional rugby for Blue Bulls Rugby Union in Pretoria. He has also played professionally in Ireland as well as holding Head Coach positions in University and Professional clubs in both South Africa and England. He has a wealth of experience in coaching forwards play and has spent a lot of time developing his coaching knowledge as well as holding the prestigious position as forwards coach for Pumas Rugby Union who compete in the Premier Division of the Currie Cup in South Africa. Being a recent addition to the coaching team, we are very excited to welcome someone of Johan’s pedigree and are sure that you will benefit from his excellent knowledge of the game.
Backs & Assistant Rugby Coach
Daniel Finney joined the coaching staff in 2018 as the Backs and Assistant Coach. Daniel has hit the ground running and brings a wealth of knowledge as well as a stand out playing career with Billingham. Daniel is currently a County Coach and this experience has helped the Men’s Rugby team gain success in the AOC Regional 7’s tournament, qualifying to represent the North East in the AOC National Championship.
Head Netball Coach
Danielle is Head Netball Coach of the college’s prestigious Netball Academy and has made a huge impact since taking over in 2018. Danielle is currently coaching at an elite level coach and former England Colleges National team and Superleague player. Since joining the academy the impact has been evidenced by 3 players being selected for the AOC England Colleges team and winning the North East AOC Regional competition. It’s safe to say that if you want to develop as a player you are in very safe hands and the college run an elite and development team each year.
Football Academy Development Team Coach
Dave is Chairman of Greatham Community Football Club which is highly regarded as one of the best Community Clubs in the North East. He has a wealth of experience in coaching from ages 6-18 and is currently involved in the Hartlepool United Development Centre for young players. Dave has recently completed a number of FA youth modules and specific FA professional development courses and works alongside Willie Boland in creating a programme where players of all abilities will flourish.
Head Basketball Coach
Mark Elderkin was appointed as the Head Coach of the Basketball Academy in 2018 and brings a wealth of success and playing experience with him. Mark played for the Durham Wildcats as a National League player leading the team from EBL Division 3 to the heights of BBL where Mark thrived as a player. As well as playing experience Mark has been a successful Head Coach with Newcastle University Women’s team winning the Treble in 2016 taking the team all the way to the BUCS Premiership.
Academies Coordinator, Lecturer in Sport and Assistant Basketball Coach
Ian Hewitt is the Assistant Basketball coach and brings a wealth of coaching experience to the table. Ian has headed Newcastle University for the past 8 years, taking them from an amateur team in NBL Division 4 to a professional team in NBL Division 1. Ian represented Durham University and played EBL for the Durham Wildcats during his playing days. As a coach Ian has also been an Assistant coach for the England Under 15s team and was the Head of the North East Regional Development Centre.
