A Hartlepool Sixth Form College student has been elected as Hartlepool’s Member of Youth Parliament.

Student Oliver Dixon has promised to work hard after he was elected as the town’s newest Member of Youth Parliament (MYP).

He was successful in being chosen after an election – where all young people from Hartlepool, aged 13 to 18 were eligible to stand as a candidate or cast a vote.

Oliver will now represent the views of young people across the borough, working with youth groups, councillors and decision makers. He will attend regional meetings and national events while also leading on campaigns and projects that will make a real impact.

Oliver said: “I am honoured to have been elected as the new MYP.

“During this campaign, I visited schools, sixth forms and further education colleges across Hartlepool and I spoke with students who want fair pay after college, better transport to get to work and training and more respect for vocational pathways – and those priorities will shape my work from day one.”

Throughout his term of MYP, Oliver will be supported by Hartlepool Borough Council’s youth services team.

Oliver studies Politics, English Literature and Art and Design at the college, and added: “I will serve every young person in Hartlepool.

“I will work hard and I will speak up for you with confidence and determination. Thank you for your trust.”
