What’s it all about?

You will develop the knowledge and skills needed to analyse data, think critically and make informed decisions; all skills that are required to be successful in any business environment.

Understanding the nature and purpose of business, mangers, leadership and decision making are just some of the topics that are included in the course. As well this you will be expected to analyse the strategic position of a business, taking into account the internal factors and external environment that can impact upon the success and competitiveness of an organisation. You will also explore all the major business functions such as marketing, finance and human resource management.

You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 5-9, including Maths & English Language

Assessment will be in the format of three, 2 hour external examinations that include a variety of assessment styles that consist of multiple choice, short answer, data response, essay and case studies.

Each paper will be out of 100 marks and equate to 33.3% of A-level weighting.

Students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to analyse data, think critically about issues and make informed decisions – all skills that are needed for further study and employment.

Students on this course will study business in a variety of contexts (e.g. large/small, UK focused/global, service/manufacturing) and consider:

- The importance of the context of business in relation to decision making
- The interrelated nature of business activities and how they affect competitiveness
- The competitive environment and the markets in which businesses operate
- The influences on functional decisions and plans including ethical and environmental issues
- The factors that might determine whether a decision is successful eg the quality of data and the degree of uncertainty
how technology is changing the way decisions are made and how businesses operate and compete
- The impact on stakeholders of functional decisions and their response to such decisions
- The use of non-quantitative and quantitative data in decision making (including the interpretation of index numbers and calculations such as ratios and percentages)

What’s next?

The majority of our students go on to study a Business related degree at universities such as Newcastle, Northumbria, Durham, Teesside, Lancaster and York. Employment Opportunities – Apprenticeship and employment opportunities in Accounting and Finance, Administration and Marketing are just some of the progression routes that our students have also obtained.
