What’s it all about?

This course is for people who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering or are looking to enhance their skills and progress to higher levels of study within the further education sector.

The course covers a wide range of subjects and offers students a foundation into engineering. Students will have the opportunity to develop practical skills alongside knowledge development in an industry standard environment.

On successful completion of the course, students can progress to a level 3 course which could include our apprenticeship provision.

You will need 2 GCSEs at grade 3-9, including English and Maths. Or a relevant Level 1 qualification.

The college does have a designated supplier for the purchase of PPE at cost price, students can choose to purchase their PPE from other suppliers if they wish to do so. This will be discussed in further detail during the enrolment process.

This course has been developed and structured to offer students the opportunity to develop their skills in areas of workshop hand fitting skills and machining, fabrication and welding, as well as electronic circuit design.

Students will also develop their knowledge and understanding of engineering, mathematics, engineering maintenance, interpreting engineering information, investigating an engineering product and the engineered world.

Assessment is carried out using a range of methods including written assignments, practical activities, online examinations and presentations in class.

In the engineering sector English and maths are important skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to along your chosen career path.

If you have not already achieved grade 4 - 9 in GCSE Math's and/or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills with timetabled sessions incorporated into your engineering study programme.

We work closely with local industry partners including: Marelli, ZF, Unipres, Adient, Grundfos, Ro-Bal Steel, Washington Metalworks, Gestamp, Liebherr, Connor Solutions, Signal Plastics and Tegral.

In working with these companies we ensure students develop the knowledge and skills that employers look for to prepare them for a career in the industry.

The course is delivered at our City Campus on Monday-Friday, between 9:00am-4:30pm. Days of attendance will be dependent upon group allocations and will be confirmed during the enrolment process.

Typical attendance will be 3 days per week with timetables issued at the start of the academic term.

- The Engineered World
- Investigating an Engineered Product
- Health and Safety in Engineering
- Engineering Maintenance
- Machining Techniques
- Electronic Circuit Design and Construction
- Interpreting and Using Engineering Information
- Mathematics for Engineering
- Welding

We have excellent engineering workshop facilities at our City Campus, all equipment is of industry standard with recent investment in new equipment and resources.

Our engineering staff have extensive industry knowledge and experience along with experience of teaching and delivery of apprenticeship programmes to a range of levels.

What’s next?

After successfully completing this course there is a range of progression routes including, the Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering or the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering Technologies.

This programme could also be used as ‘off the job’ training and can help students develop the skills needed to apply for an apprenticeship in Engineering.
