What’s it all about?

This course will provide you with the fundamental theory, safe behaviours and practical skills required to work in the science sector, specialising in Laboratory Sciences. It will include developing understanding of how the industry works, core scientific knowledge and concepts, and key regulations including best scientific laboratory practice, health and safety, and information management.

Much of your time will be spent in specialist laboratory facilities developing the skills needed to work effectively in this field. The breadth of this course will enable you to apply your skills in many different fields and roles within the science sector.

You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4-9. Grade 5 in English Language, Maths & Science.

The qualification core is assessed through external examination. The laboratory science specialism is assessed synoptically through rigorous practical assignments.

As part of the course you will take part in a 45 day industrial placement to develop your practical and technical skills for an occupation or career.

T Levels (Technical Levels) are a work-focused alternative to A-Levels. The T Level in Laboratory Science is a two year course which includes 45 days in the workplace to aid the development of your and technical skills.

These Level 3 technical qualifications will provide students with the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to progress into skilled employment or higher level technical training or study in the Science sector.

The core knowledge and understanding will be assessed through an examination and core skills through a practical employer-set project. In addition to this, maths, English and general digital skills will be integrated within the qualification in occupationally relevant contexts.

Modules will include:

- Working within the science sector
- Managing information and data within the science sector
- Best scientific practice
- Experimental equipment and techniques
- The use of technology and electronics in measurement and diagnostics
- Core scientific knowledge such as cellular biology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, electricity and the use of radioisotopes
- Employer set project which involves problem solving, working with others, researching, communication and project management
