Hartlepool Sixth Form is launching an innovative online tool to support school leavers looking to progress into further education.
The ‘Get Ahead’ programme, which launches on 27 April and runs until 26 June, will give current Year 11s the opportunity to experience studying at the Sixth Form while they are at home during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Pupils will be set research or practical-based projects from their chosen subject area, with the Sixth Form’s website offering links to useful resources such as essential reading lists and media files which will help them complete their tasks.
Teaching staff will offer ongoing support through welcome videos, interactive discussions and Q&A sessions with current students sharing their experiences throughout the final term
Mark Hughes, Head of Hartlepool Sixth Form, said: “We are very keen to offer support to Year 11 pupils whilst they are at home, waiting for the outcomes of their GCSE studies in what is a difficult and frustrating time for them.
“The ‘Get Ahead’ programme will be offered to any pupil who has applied to join us in September, engaging them in project work supported by online touch-point sessions to prepare pupils for their transition to further education.
“Stepping up to Sixth Form is a challenging time for young people, and the current international crisis will make students even more nervous. We want to reassure them that they are capable of studying at Sixth Form and that we are able to support them throughout their journey.
“We believe it is a fantastic way for Year 11 pupils to virtually meet their tutors, get a glimpse into life at Hartlepool Sixth Form and use their time constructively over the coming weeks.”
Hartlepool Sixth Form recruitment staff are working with schools in the local area and will be contacting those who have already applied to invite them to join the’Get Ahead’ programme, with further details to be announced on the college’s social media channels and website.
